Why Are My Brakes Grinding?
If you’ve ever been driving around Flushing and noticed a screeching sound coming from your car, you’ve likely wondered, “Why are my brakes grinding?” Your brakes making a grinding noise can be an indication of issues with your braking system, which requires immediate attention.
While you may be tempted to hold off on addressing this issue until absolutely necessary, it’s critical to keep in mind that the National Highway Safety Administration has reported that faulty brakes could play a role in as many as 25% of all road accidents. As a result, it’s best to schedule a service appointment at North Bay GMC as soon as possible. In the meantime, let’s go over some common reasons for brakes making grinding noises.
Reasons Why Your Brakes Are Grinding When Stopping
If you notice that your brakes make grinding noises when you’re coming to a stop, it could be for a couple of different reasons:
- If you hear this noise when stopping or slowing down, it’s likely the result of worn-down brake pads. Over time, brake pads start thinning out and this causes a squealing noise, also known as “brake scrubbing.” As the pads wear down further, they’ll start making a grinding noise instead.
- If you start to hear a sharper grinding noise, it could be the sound of your brake disc and calipers. This can also cause your pedal to have a rumbling feeling. This may require a brake pad replacement, but also disc or rotor replacement.
- When stopping at full force, if you hear the brakes grinding, it could be your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Your ABS will activate if you apply the full brakes, and it may even cause the pedals to vibrate.
